Scholarship Fund
Donald DeLong Memorial

The key role of the Guild is to support the future of organ performance and composition. For over 50 years, the Jacksonville Chapter of the American Guild Organists has provided financial support toward the education of organ students.

AGO Scholarship auditions will be held this spring!

If you have a student interested in applying for a scholarship, or you would like to contribute to the Scholarship Fund, contact the Dean, Rodney Cleveland, via phone 904-733-8055, or email LakewoodRodney@aol.com.

The 2006-2007 recipient of the Jacksonville AGO Scholarship is Gregg Gafford. He is finishing his last year at Winthrop University in Rock Hill, SC as a music and philosophy/religious studies major. Gregg is a member of several collegiate and civic choirs and serves as the organist at a local United Methodist Church. He is active in young adult and higher education ministries in the Episcopal Dioceses of Southwest Florida and Upper South Carolina, and serves as the Peer Minister for the Episcopal campus ministry (Canterbury) at Winthrop University. He recently performed at the 2006 ACDA Southern Convention in West Virginia as a member of the award winning a cappella group, The Winthrop University Jazz Voices. His hopes for the future are to pursue graduate studies in choral conducting and to seek ordination in the Episcopal Church

He is available during Winter and Summer break for substitution.

Master of Sacred Music
University of Notre Dame

Many greetings,

At the moment I am recruiting students for our new Master of Sacred Music degree. The degree combines music (two organ recitals, organ literature, music history) and liturgy courses. The assistantships pay full tuition for two years plus a stipend of $10,000 per year for two years. If you know of any prospective undergraduate students or others who are not currently enrolled in a graduate program, I would appreciate hearing from you. If you have any names to suggest, I am happy to contact them. It is interesting that five out of six students currently enrolled in the program are protestant, including two Lutherans.

Typically a student on an assistantship works in the Basilica of the Sacred Heart on campus. The Sunday morning mass has been broadcast across the country every Sunday on the Hallmark Channel for the last five years; the average viewership was around 1.5 million per week. This broadcast will change soon to another network. There is so much musical work to be done there that it is a great hands-on learning experience.

In addition, we have a strong performance program at the undergraduate level at Notre Dame. If you likewise know of prospective students who might be interested in studying organ in a liberal arts environment (and in a top-20 university) and who are not currently enrolled in an undergraduate program, I would appreciate hearing from you.

Our new Fritts organ and organ hall are stunning. We have an eclectic-style tracker organ in the Basilica of the Sacred Heart that is also used for teaching, practice, and performance. You can see the Fritts at www.nd.edu/~music/omalley.html

Many thanks for your help, and all the best,
