Job Description:

The Director of Music Ministries, a full-time position, is responsible for leading the church in planning, organizing, conducting, and evaluating a comprehensive music ministry for a 6,000 member church with 1,500 in weekly attendance at 10 weekend services on 3 campuses. Reporting to the Rector, the Director is an integral member of the Leadership Team and will lead staff working to build quality music programs that enhance the worship and spiritual life of the church. The Director is also the primary organist for the church.

Responsibilities:

  • Facilitates all musical offerings - traditional, contemporary, children, adult and youth for a multi-campus church.
  • Plans and coordinates the operation and evaluation of a comprehensive Music Ministry. Participates actively in advising, arranging and providing music for special projects, ministries, and other church activities in cooperation with ministry leaders and clergy.
  • Provides special music on Festival/Holy Days that reflects their sacred nature.
  • Directs multiple choirs/music groups and congregational singing.
  • Supervises the work of paid and volunteer music leaders.
  • Understands the opportunities and challenges of a large, resource-sized parish.
  • Offers creative vision and encourages growth.
  • Recruits and works with soloists and musicians who share their musical gifts in worship.
  • Reaches out to the Jacksonville music community, including the Jacksonville Symphony.
  • Provides a variety of music styles such as contemporary, traditional, gospel/spiritual, and appropriate music for Celtic and Taize reflective services. · Administers the business affairs of the music ministry including the annual budget, overseeing expenditures, projecting music purchases as well as the maintenance and care of all music supplies, equipment, and instruments.
  • Complies with all established church policies and procedures as well as applicable federal and state laws.
  • Coordinates and conducts classical musical training for children.
  • Understands and uses the technology available at Christ Church.
  • Participates in training and understands and complies with “Safeguarding God’s People” and “Safeguarding God’s Children”.
  • Serves as staff advisor for church committees as determined by the clergy.
  • Oversees the church’s Fine Arts Program.

Requirements: Knowledge, Skills, Abilities

  • At least 5 years of experience in a full time music related position in a church.
  • Experience with the Episcopal Church liturgy is a plus.
  • Ability to play organ and piano; other instruments are a plus.
  • Ability to collaborate and foster team spirit.
  • Administrative skills to manage the daily operations of the music program.
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal skills and organization skills.
  • Commitment to Biblical Christian principles and teachings both professionally and personally.
  • Knowledge and skills in a full range of musical styles - classical, traditional, contemporary, jazz, folk, gospel, reflective.
  • Strong leadership skills with the ability to provide vision, energy, inspiration and experience.
  • Understanding of, or desire to quickly learn, the Episcopal liturgy and how to integrate music to accentuate its meaning in worship.

Female Voices needed for Schola Cantorae

The St. Augustine Schola Cantorae is looking for women singers interested in exploring Gregorian chant and polyphony. The schola rehearses weekly on Monday evenings in St. Augustine and sings Vespers regularly at the Shrine of La Leche. Other appearances have included the St. Augustine Founders’ Day and the Cathedral-Basilica. No prior experience with chant or Latin is required.
