American Guild of English Handbell Ringers - Area IV
Handbell Seminar in Jacksonville
August 21-22, 2009
On August 21-22, 2009, we are having a training seminar for ringers and directors with the fabulous Tim Waugh (www.timwaugh.com), assisted by classes taught by other well-qualified members from Area IV. Rodney Cleveland, music director and organist at Lakewood Presbyterian Church, is our gracious host and will present a lunch time "dessert" along with 15 minutes of glorious music from the church organ (an Allen Renaissance Quantum 3-manual 80-stop 320-voice organ).
This event requires NO advance music purchase or preparation. We will sightread many works suitable for your use during the year, with purchase available only if desired. The classes will cover many areas of interest to both ringers and directors. Tim will not just rush through the sighteading, but pinpoint "the teachable moment" in each. So even if that particular piece is not appropriate for your choir, the "teachable moment" surely will be. And, as always, bringing a full choir is never required.
We don't often have an Area IV Seminar right here in our own backyard, so the time is NOW to register and jumpstart your group into the fall ringing season. Lots of our board members will be present to greet, talk, and work with you.
Contact Valerie Stephenson for more information via email valeries1@comcast.net or phone 904-880-1806

A Family Event! Come hear Prokofiev’s "Peter and the Wolf", a musical tale for children.
On October 19, 2003, an "Organ Spectacular" (www.agohq.org/events/os.html) will be held in more than 250 cities around the world to showcase the organ and to celebrate the "International Year of the Organ," (www.agohq.org/events/iyo.html) which will continue through June 2009, and feature a multitude of activities ranging from organ concerts to organbuilding workshops.
The organ dates back some 2,000 years to ancient Egypt, making it the world's oldest keyboard instrument. It has had a colorful history, with many contributions to our culture. Today, it continues to enchant both young and old. The International Year of the Organ is an opportunity to introduce this amazing instrument.

The event is free and open to the public.
Archaeological evidence indicates that Florida’s springs have been a source of life
for thousands of years.
"O God, our help in ages past, our hope for years to come, our shelter from the stormy blast, and our eternal home!" -- Considered to be one of the greatest in hymnody, this is a paraphrase of Palm 90: "Before the mountains were brought forth, or ever Thou had formed the earth and the world, even from everlasting, to everlasting, Thou art God."
This hymn once had 9 stanzas! It was part of The Psalms of David, published by Isaac Watts in 1719. Watts, often called the father of English hymnody, wrote more than 600 hymns.
The tune, "St. Anne," had been composed in 1708 by William Croft, an Oxford musician. This majestic hymn tune has been borrowed by great Masters such as Handel and Bach to create their own powerful interpretations.
Join us in singing hymns of praise that celebrate the water of eternal life,
with organ works performed by members of the Jacksonville AGO.
"Come thou fount of every blessing; tune my heart to sing thy praise.
Streams of mercy, never ceasing, call for songs of loudest praise."

Friends of the Jacksonville Symphony
Read the letter from the organizers of Friends of the Jacksonville Symphony: FOJS_Letter-01-03-08.pdf.
Friends of the Jacksonville Symphony (FOJS) was established in the last weeks of 2007 to support the locked out JSO musicians and to help the Jacksonville Symphony Orchestra survive. The immediate goal at the time was to help resolve the impasse in negotiations. Through the Community Foundation in Jacksonville www.jaxcf.org, a 501-c-3 fund was established so that donations could be made to directly benefit the musicians once the impasse was resolved.
Donations raised by FOJS will fund additional concert(s) (thereby extending the season) as well as new community education/outreach programs, all of which were specified and agreed to by JSPA and JSA as part of the new contract.
|
Funds donated to the FOJS fund must be received through The Community Foundation. Regulations require that FOJS donations held at The Community Foundation must be given to a 501-c-3 organization. The JSA is such an organization and the JSA has agreed to accept the funds we raise and distribute them as defined in the contract.
Contributions should be mailed to:
