Pipe Organ Encounter
Charlotte, NC ~ July 13-18, 2008
|
|
Dear AGO Region 4 Sub-Deans and Newsletter Editors,
I am pleased to tell you that the Charlotte POE scheduled for July 13-18 has 10 registered students, as well as a stellar faculty lineup. The POE planning committee has worked diligently these last few months to create an energizing and inspiring week for all who attend.
Our 10 registered students come from a variety of states, including North Carolina, South Carolina, Virginia, Georgia, Florida, Maryland, Pennsylvania, and Maine. We hope to have at least 10 more students to register. That's were we can use your help! Attached is the POE brochure in PDF format; please forward this on to any students in your chapter, your private studios, or other venues who might be interested. The registration deadline of March 31 (that's today) has been extended indefinitely. The registration fee of $400 still stands, but scholarship assistance is available. Visit the chapter website, www.charlotteago.org, for details (click on "POE 2008).
|
Attached are one page summary document of the POE POE_ Charlotte_2008.pdf, and a much larger (3 Meg) glossy brochure describing the POE POE_CLT_2008_brochure.pdf.
Some of the week's events include:
- An opening recital by James David Christie, Oberlin Conservatory (who will also be on the POE faculty)
- A hands-on visit with demonstrations at the John Dower & Co. organ shop in Lincolnton, NC
- A demonstration and organ crawl at Calvary Church, home of the world's 18th largest pipe organ (5-manual, 205-rank Moller)
If you have any further questions, please don't hesitate to contact me via e-mail poe@charlotteago.org.
Most sincerely yours,
Patrick Pope

The autograph manuscript of the hitherto unknown Bach aria "Alles mit Gott und nichts ohn' ihn" was discovered in Weimar, Germany, in 2005 in the library of the Duchess Anna Amalia. The aria was written for the 52nd birthday of Duke Wilhelm Ernst on October 30th, 1713, when Bach was organist to the ducal court. This performance is its first hearing in Northeast Florida. The aria is in multiple verses separated by a ritornello for strings. The author of the lyrics, Johann Anton Mylius, a Lutheran pastor noted for his powerful sermons, chose as the theme for his birthday poem a German translation of the duke's motto, Omnia cum deo et nihil sine eo.
Bach's 'Coffee' Cantata will be given in a semi-staged performance sung in English in a coffee house setting complete with coffee bar, probably very like its first performance in Leipzig in a coffee house. Coffee was the rage at the time and the 'Coffee' Cantata was popular throughout Europe.
