Cummer: Ilya Yakushev, Piano
Ilya Yakushev received his first prize-winning award at age 12 in his native St. Petersburg, Russia. His tours and performances have had international success. He won the World Piano Competition in 2005 and his performance with the San Francisco symphony was included in the top ten music events of the year in 2007. Since 2002, he has served as the Executive Director of the International Keyboard Institute and Festival in Mannes.

This fun, interactive and informative presentation by one of the top award-winning collegiate jazz bands and vocalists in the country will have kids boppin’ in their seats and swinging to the beat of America’s original art form—Jazz! From the origins of New Orleans, to the Blues and Big Band Swing, students will learn about the history of jazz in an interactive toe-tapping, finger-snapping program. From scat singing to fun jazzy “hand-jive,” students will participate in creating the music, learning about the Blues form, improvisation, the “swing feel” emphasizing beats 2 & 4. Instrumental solo and band sectional demonstrations with performers take the music to the students in the audience. This is a musical and educational experience not to be missed!
